We created this Interpretive Sign prototype to showcase the different types of PixelStix technology and how they can be used to create a smarter and more interactive sign for urban settings, national/local parks, and walking tours.

HOW DOES THIS SIGN WORK?
Like most Interpretive signage, there is information that visitors can read about on the sign itself. For our prototype we decided to describe the history and ecology of a fictional version of Round Lake in St Petersburg, FL. In addition, this sign is equipped with 7 PixelStix that each add something unique to how the sign is used. The PixelStix have been embedded into the sign substrate and can be configured in any way or have any variation of the features listed.
Instructions
To use the sign, someone simply needs to Download the PixelStix app, Tap the P, and Touch their phone to any of the sign's PixelStix.
PixelStix is based on NFC technology. They are small computers that do not use batteries or electricity to work. Phones equipped with the PixelStix app will 'touch' their phone to the sign.
scavenger hunt built-in
Touching this PixelStix with your phone will show you the location of the other signs that makeup the same 'gallery' of signs.
This PixelStix can easily be programmed to show a map of scavenger hunt PixelStix
Once a map of signs are visible in the app, users can launch the content from their bike or car.
community video
Touching this PixelStix will play a video that was uploaded by anyone in the community to this sign. All uploaded videos are approved for content and selected before being made available.
The purpose/benefit of the community video is show examples of how people are enjoying the space but also to reflect back the community that hosts the sign.
Could be a video from the mayor, local historian, or ecologist welcoming you to the space.
upload new videos
Anyone can upload a video from their phone into the sign by touching this PixelStix.
SIGN WEB PAGE
When this PixelStix is touched the main web page is provided that compliments the information on this sign. This page is a normal web page and can contain text, videos, etc.
When viewing the gallery of sign locations in the PixelStix app, a 'Map Tap' on a particular sign PixelStix will launch this web page.
HIDDEN VIDEOS
Since PixelStix can be embedded into the sign, this allows us to place web pages or videos that tell the story of any of the graphics in the sign. For our prototype, the birds and tortoise are equipped with videos of the various park's wildlife.
